During a bad economy companies often cut their training budgets. That can make sense if your survival is threatened, just as an animal can be so hungry it could gnaw its own leg off. But if your business is in better shape than that, training is more important than ever at a time like this. Here's why: |
For the Employee
The truism of the workplace for the last decade is that there is no such thing as job security. If you don't consider yourself self-employed then you are setting yourself up for disappointment if your employer doesn't happen to reciprocate your loyalty. If your company goes through layoffs, ask yourself who they're most likely to pick: the employee with the most expertise or the least? The one they've invested the most in or the least? You need to be as valuable to them as possible.
For the Self-Employed
You need to remain valuable for the same reasons as the employee: your customers are your employers, and your value to them depends on your expertise. It is never good enough in this field to stand still.
For the Employer
Your viability in this economy depends upon both maintaining your technological edge and leveraging expertise to get work done as fast as possible. During a harsh economy, training can be the secret weapon that makes you more attractive than the competition.
